Custom Single-Family Home | Hawthorne Circle
The Hawthorne Circle Residence Project was the ground-up construction of a single-family home designed in the tradition of 18th-century French Colonial cottages. Blending traditional European architecture with site-specific adaptations, key features include a seven-foot elevation to mitigate flooding, deep verandas for wind protection, and open interiors to enhance airflow. Designed by Cooper Johnson Smith, the residence reflects a fictional history, showcasing "various additions” made over time. This home, honored with the Addison Mizner Award by the Institute of Classical Architecture, features a central hipped-pavilion cottage, flanked by two small gabled cottages, and a two-story carriage house at the rear. Each distinct section is connected by enclosed breezeways and covered galleries, with unique materials and architectural features tailored to each component.
